This summer is predicted to be one of the hottest in Australia and we have already seen that with a few plus 40 days across the country in early December. Alongside the convenience and protection Transitions Lenses offers us, they’re also the prefect style partner for summer. We’ve joined forces to create our list of favourite things to pair with your glasses to keep you looking stylish as you enjoy the long summer days ahead.
Summer Colours
This year there is a great deal of emphasis on earth colours as well as your traditional light pastels and florals. The earthy tones like greens, creams and dark or burnt oranges are a great look for Aussie summer. Might I add most of these shades look fantastic in lighter fabrics like linen and cotton blends. When it comes to pairing glasses with these colours, go for traditional looking frames like the tortoise shell or even frameless with a vibrant lens colour, such as emerald or amethyst, which balance out the neutrality of the frames and the overall aesthetic.
Styles
There are a few styles making a comeback, but like fashion predictors say, most have come from a time gone by. There are a few stands out for us in the men’s department that have been greatly influenced by social media and traditional mediums. ,The two categories I’ve noticed a revival being smart beach wear or beach lux for the weekends, alongside your classical suiting from the ‘40s that movies like The Kingsman have made very popular again amongst the younger audience. Look at your traditional double breasted with conservative fabric, but slimmer cut for a more youthful look. (see middle image below)
When it comes to smart beach or resort wear, people spending time at leisure spots are keen to maintain the refined but relaxed look. There has been a great resurgence in the short swimmers and also light shirts that have a focus on the old school camp collar. Think of the fantastic era of Sean Connery and his classic Bond beach shots as inspiration or even the foundation of these design concepts.
Summer Style Icons
When it comes to style icons, we have put together a mood board of what we think you should keep your eye on in terms of trends, people to watch and styles you can easily add to your wardrobe.
Loose light clothing like below with a more relaxed fit. Noticeably, the monochrome outfit has been extremely popular. Wearing a complete look in the same colour is a bold move, but shows confidence and an eye for current trends.
Re-visiting ‘the smart beach casual’ previously mentioned by style king, Sean Connery. Here are a few of our favourite shots. It’s an era and beach lifestyle which Australians are currently being influenced by. Check out brands like Orlebar Brown, Venroy and Hapeto which have captured this sensational decade of fashion and brought it into the 2000’s.
Accessories
The accessory game is getting stronger amongst the men’s market and there are more and more options for the modern male. Our favourite trend has been the rise of high quality casual accessories. The stand- outs for us here at SB HQ have been the slow phase out of the Aussie thong. More men are ditching the summer staple for a high quality slide, AND! It’s a smarter alternative that elevates the simple shorts and shirt.
More stylish man bags have entered the market of recently, and we are all about it. One in particular has been the humble “tote bag”. Once a bag considered just for the Sunday markets has risen to the tops of luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Prada and Gucci. Adapting this simple design with high quality leather, patterns and of course logos have now fetched a higher price and increase in demand for what once was only classified as a convenient shopping accessory.
Finally, a personal favourite accessory that goes hand in hand with the perfect pair of sunglasses is the woven panama hat. It’s a practical and smart accessory for the scorching summer heat ahead and it is able to be worn on an outfit that’s simple, e.g. white t-shirt and shorts for your causal smart weekend ‘long lunch’ look.
Don’t forget, that whatever the weather, your Transitions lenses work both inside and out. Be creative with your frame style and lens colour this summer – remember, fashion is about fun, and carving your own niche. I love my Tom Ford frames with my sapphire lens – it adds something special to my look, and works with my double breasted suit, casual beach styles, catching up over coffee and even enjoying a drink with friends as the sun goes down.
